CHINNOR & DISTRICT ROYAL BRITISH LEGION CRIBBAGE LEAGUE

A Brief History​

Cribbage has been played under the banner of the Chinnor & District Royal British Legion for over fifty years.  While official meeting minutes show that a dedicated league was created in 1972 under the chairmanship of Jim Barrett, there is evidence that cribbage was regularly played alongside darts and dominoes in a combined league format which existed as early as 1962. 
   
In the 1960s and 1970s, cribbage was played extensively in local pubs and clubs, with many having enough players to enter more than one team, creating enough demand to warrant two distinct divisions. Just as they are today, league matches were played on Mondays, but cup and knock-out games took place on Wednesdays to ensure the season could be completed without running into the summer months.

Teams and (unfortunately) public houses have come and gone, but a perusal of the “Previous Winners” section of the website shows that Chearsley, Haddenham, Longwick, Naphill, Stoke Mandeville, Stokenchurch, Stone, Towersey and Waddesdon have all provided venues in the past, while we currently have teams entered from the pubs and clubs of Chinnor, Dinton, Lacey Green, Long Crendon, Princes Risborough, Thame and Tiddington.

The aim of the league has been constant since its inception. Firstly, we want players to enjoy a (not too) competitive game of both singles and doubles in a friendly and social environment. Secondly, we hope to support the pubs and clubs of the district by providing some trade on what is a traditionally quiet night and last but not least, to offer support to our ex-servicemen and women through the association with the Chinnor branch of the Royal British Legion. The league is not run for profit and surplus funds are donated to The British Legion at the end of each season with many thousands of pounds being raised for this cause over the years.

Since 2006, the league has run as a single division, with teams competing in both singles & pairs leagues with knockout competitions also being played. Matches take place on a Monday evening from autumn through to spring and at the end of each season, a Presentation Evening is held, where further individual knockout singles and pairs events are held prior to the winners and runners up in all competitions receiving trophies.
